National biscuit day in the UK is on the 29th May. To celebrate this appliance manufacturers CDA surveyed 1000 people across the UK to find out which biscuits were their favourites.

Topping the poll was, surprisingly, the Jaffa Cake! Introduced in 1927 and taking their name from Jaffa oranges, there has always been much debate over whether they are a biscuit, or as their name suggests, a cake. Despite the never ending confusion, Jaffa Cakes are very popular.

In 2nd place, the survey lists the humble shortbread. Available in all shapes and sizes, this traditional Scottish biscuit is a tricky bake to get right. Buttery, crumbly and sweet, shortbread is a popular addition to any biscuit tin.

Next up is the Bourbon biscuit. A sandwich style biscuit filled with chocolate buttercream. The Bourbon dates back to 1910 but only took its name in the 1930s, from the French royal House of Bourbon. The holes in the biscuit portion of the Bourbon allow steam to escape during baking, preventing the biscuit from cracking.

Voted first place in a National Poll, but 4th place in this survey, was the chocolate digestive. The digestive base was actually invented in 1839 by two doctors to help with digestion issues. By 1925 McVitie’s had added a chocolate coating to top of the biscuit and the chocolate digestive was born. This historic biscuit was voted the most popular biscuit in the UK to dunk in a cup of tea!

The Custard Cream takes 5th place. The biscuit sandwich is decorated with an elaborate pattern typically from the Victorian era. The cream vanilla filling has been given a twist by many companies adding chocolate, strawberry or orange flavours.

Lots of Biscuits

It is estimated that the average UK household buys an average of 96 packets of biscuits a year. The word “Biscuit” comes from the Latin words “Bis” for twice and “coctus” for baked.
