What is Catering?
The definition of catering is the provision of food and drink at a social event or gathering. The role of a caterer can be varied, from transporting and preparing the food, to displaying or serving the food.
There are lots of things to consider when planning an event and food is no exception. You must determine how guests will eat, if there is to be no formal sit down meal, any type of food must be small and easy to eat. Nothing that requires cutlery or is messy. More formal events with a table setting mean that serving of the food must be dealt with, will guests serve themselves or will the meal be plated and served to the table?
Depending on what the client would like, certain events lend themselves to different styles of food. Baby showers can have themed catering in the gender colours, the time of day may also dictate the menu with guests preferring a lighter meal in the daytime, or richer choices later in the day.
Some events may request more elaborate menus, whilst others simply want to provide guests with sustenance. A favourite at Anna Baker Cakes is veggie sausage rolls, and chili veggie sausage rolls. Picnic boxes were used to cater a wake recently, each box contained sandwiches, a mini quiche, vegetarian sausage rolls, a piece of a cake and a flapjack with a napkin. These are particularly popular at present as they make contact minimal for guests.
Mass catering is never a problem either with mouth-watering puddings such as pavlova, fudge cake or cheesecake which can all be easily divided up and plated for guests to enjoy.
